KAMPONG TANAH JAMBU, Wednesday, 20 July 2022 – Lance Corporal (U) Ahmad Shukry bin Mohamad Yusof from 573 Squadron, No. 5 Wing has been awarded the Flight Safety Champion award of 2022.
During an engine start of aircraft 13 October 2021, Lance Corporal (U) Shukry heard an unusual sound emanating from the vicinity of aircraft’s tail rotor. He immediately informed his supervisor (Crew Chief) to provide confirmation. The Crew Chief confirmed what he had heard and the aircraft was shut down.
Operating in a busy, noisy environment Lance Corporal (U) Shukry, heard an unusual noise which could indicate a potential problem and exercised his professional judgement to immediately informed his supervisor. With the safety of the aircrew and aircraft paramount in his mind, disregarding operational pressure he made the correct decision. The problem was subsequently identified as insecure blade erosion tape, which, if not identified and repaired, could cause further issues such as FOD, blade imbalance and damage to the blades. Conscious of his flight safety responsibilities, he subsequently submitted an occurrence report for the event to be fully investigated.
Lance Corporal (U) Shukry should be highly commended for identifying a potentially dangerous problem and swiftly undertaking the correct immediate actions. In recognition of his commendable moral courage and outstanding professional knowledge and awareness which prevented a potential inflight incident, Lance Corporal (U) Shukry is awarded a Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) Flight Safety Champion, Silver Class.
